OVERVIEW

OVERVIEW-This class is for Legacy Employees only

The Neonatal Resuscitation Program (NRP), based on American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP) and American Heart Association (AHA) recommendations, offers an algorithm-based approach to the immediate care and resuscitation of the stressed or sick neonate. This course is based on the 9th edition NRP course materials, released in 2025.

The NRP Course is designed to teach the lifesaving skills required to be both a team member and a team leader for an infant needing resuscitation. Because the NRP Course covers extensive material in a short time, you will need to prepare for the course beforehand.

This Part 2 Skills Session is for health care professionals who might respond to a neonatal emergency at the time of delivery (completion of NRP online Part 1 required to attend). Upon completion, participants will gain the knowledge and skills for neonatal resuscitation.

NRP algorithm

  • Be very familiar with the NRP algorithm in your NRP Provider Manual. Be prepared to apply the algorithm to multiple clinical scenarios during the NRP course.

Ventilation practice

  • There will be three types of devices available to practice with during the NRP course: self-inflating bags, pressure-inflating bags, and t-piece resuscitators.  You should plan on practicing with the device that is used on your unit or in your institution.  If you are not familiar with the device available to you, please find out prior to the course so you know what device(s) you will want to concentrate on mastering.
